Wed. 12/3/2008

Hi All,

Wonderful meeting this morning.

And, you might have missed a free breakfast.
An anonymous Santa grabbed all the checks.
Ho Ho Ho and many thanks, Santa.

And, welcome to Peter from Random PC Repair.

Charlie talked about accountability.
Sandy talked about creating vision boards and goals.
Burt talked about daily and weekly goals and something he called a OneSheet.

A 'OneSheet', or however we call it, is contact information that includes a few
statements about what we do, who we do it for, and our ideal clients. The purpose
is so that each of us have an easier time making recommendations.

I like that this group is moving to helpful interactivity. It has aspects of a Master Mind
group or an ad hoc board of directors. There is counsel and advice. There are pointed
queries and enlightening comments. I thank you all and hope you are getting benefits from it.

In most networking groups we are the expert for 30 seconds. But do we really know what
the listeners are hearing? Do we know how we are coming across?

So, we have some homework. We are compiling additional data for each other.
Burt wants it and I have asked for some help as well.

Please check under your First Name in the sidebar at:
Check to see if any changes to your contact information are needed.
Make a short list of what you do and who you do it for.

Please email your list to DavidWhite@YourMessageDoctor.com or Reply All.
I will put it on the blog and make a quick Excel or plain text doc available to share.

Charlie won the kitty this morning and we will be looking at a couple of Sales letters he uses.
I will forward them along as soon as they arrive.

Or, Charlie, you can grab the list from here and go with it.

Thanks. See you next week.

David White

P.S.

Invite someone to breakfast at Benny's.

JoeNetworks Thanksgiving Wed. Update

Hi All,
Thanks to Katie and Claire for visiting with us recently.
Katie is looking for a marketing gig, or similar, and Claire
needs to top off the tank with a couple new accounting clients.
By the way Claire has done my books for 20 years. I highly
recommend her services.
NEXT MEETING - HOLIDAY WEDNESDAY.
According to the votes of those present last time, it looks like
there might be only a few of you meeting this next Wednesday.
Everybody else is heading out of town. Drive careful.

Pam has since updated that she will be filling orders instead.
That leaves Burt, Charlie and Sandy.
Cara said she 'might' stop by.
Some of these folks in particular drive a long way
to be in the group. Please know that and keep in
touch with each other if you change your mind.
On another note - thanks to all for giving feedback to Stan
on his marketing materials.
And Claire, a guest, won the kitty. She currently has no
marketing materials. Let's help her create something.
Details to follow.
THIS JUST IN - Bob Ford's schedule has recently changed.
He has a ton of morning meetings and will not be around for awhile.
Good luck with the meetings Bob and thanks for checking in.
Pat and I will be heading to mom's in Missouri for the holiday weekend.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all.
See you at Benny's on Wed. Dec. 3rd.

Hi Gang,

I'd like to thank you for the time you took commenting,
critiquing and communicating with me as Your Message Doctor
at last Wednesday's session.

I have yet to triage the notes or consider the priority of
the notes I took. I do thank you once again.

This next week we're taking a peek at the presentation
of ideas on behalf of Stan Kosmatka.

Finally, Sandy emailed this lovely note to me right after
our Wednesday meeting. I do greatly appreciate the kind words.

Finally, there was a member that's not feeling well and he
took a minute out to notify us of his absence.

Thanks. See you Wednesday. Invite a friend.

Another Interactive Tip on Business Cards

Jeff said he'd been in a group that shared the business cards of every member and then critiqued them. It sounds like there's potential value in that action. We might give it a whirl.

Sometimes people are not in a position to alter their card designs. Sometimes they are. We'll go with what we've got.

Thanks to Jeff Walden for that.

Interactive Networking Group

At many or most networking events we’ve been to, people get a half minute to 15 or 20 to tell their story. It’s the elevator speech - mostly presentation. Relatively low interactivity. After all, we’re supposed to be the experts. Right?

We know, or think we know, what it is we’re putting out there. Rarely do we get feedback on what anyone’s interpretation of our message was.

So, we did a very cool thing last week at JoeNetworks. We elected to to give feedback, ask questions, and brainstorm with a fellow member. We selected someone the week before and each of us took time in the intervening week to examine a presenter’s message and bring back what they got out of it.

And everyone had done that homework. Almost unbelievable.

Sandy was the first to to be selected and she set the bar really high. Her ability to hear, accept and balance, comments and critiques was amazing. I hope I do half as well when it’s my turn.

And, because I won the dollar pot, it is my turn next week.

So, tell me what you think. www.YourMessageDoctor.com

Be well,

David White

P.S. Here’s a wonderful email Sandy sent after the meeting.

Good morning,

I would like to thank each and every one of you for your very valuable input regarding my business presentation and website. It was very helpful to hear what others see, hear and think about when they come upon this information. All of your input will help to make my business stronger, I do thank you.

What a wonderful resource this networking group is! The size of this group and the personalities that attend definitely make this type of process possible. Definitely an advantage over a large group, at least in this respect.

I wish you all a day filled with positive encouragement and reinforcement such as you shared with me this morning,

Sandy :)

The “knock out question” - what is it?

I'd asked Stan to expand on his "knock out question he described last Wednesday.
Here it is:
The "knock out question" is designed to quickly qualify your prospect early on in your first F2F meeting.
Most of us have described what are target market candidate is. Say your target is a firm with multi location offices..

After locking in with a target, your next step is "How likely will I do business with him/her?"
Your business and each of our businesses has a subtle qualifier that will reveal our chances of doing business. To make my business model work, say the minimum number of offices my target should have is 10.

For example, if you're selling telecommunications devices based on volume of devices, say fax machines, your subtle question may be, "Your say your firm is growing, just how many offices in your firm use fax machines today and what is the total number of offices do you expect to have by this time next year? " If his/her answer is two now and two more at this time next year, that's a prospect not to spend too much time on. However, if the person said 9 offices now and forecast for a total of 15 by this time next year, he/she may be well worth moving the sales process to your next step.

---
Thank you, Stan.
The JoeNetworks group appreciates it

Eighteen weeks

JoeNetworks had (had) a Thursday meeting for 18 weeks. It grew up to 6 people tops. In the last 6 weeks there were only 2 of us.
I decided to take it off the calendar and all of a sudden people are waking up to the Thursday thing.

Twice now in two weeks someone called me wondering where I was.

I'd been sending frequent emails of course.

So, this is how long things take.

Reminds me of Seth Godin's book "The Dip". The first flush of energy and enthusiasm will carry you up the hill. You cross over the mountains still full of steam, but now the long valley is between you and the destination. Can we make it?

Sept. 3rd '08

We had 11 people attend this morning. Thank you all.
At our current size we can still manage time to get our introductions done, yet be off-the-clock enough to have a small focus group or two going.
Time for a little depth to our growing group.

However, in order to keep some order, Wednesday breakfast starts at 7:15 a.m.
We'll order off the menu at 7:30 and begin introductions.
One of these days we'll get a feature presentation going.
Who's first?

And ... just a couple follow-up notes.
First off, email me and I'll post your notes to the blog.
That way some of these things we share can take on a bit longer life.

Bob Striegel - wirelesstoyzb2b@gmail.com - has shared some valuable
information.

A reminder to get on the Cellphone No Call list.

MADISON, Wis.-The deadline for getting on Wisconsin's first No Call List
that will include cell phone numbers is fast approaching. The state
started its No Call List to protect consumers from telemarketing calls in
2003. But it did not start accepting cell phone numbers until June 6.

The state puts out its No Call List quarterly, and the first list
with cell phone numbers will come out Oct. 1.

To get on that list, cell phone owners must sign up by Aug. 31.

Consumers can sign up for the list free of charge by calling
1-866-9NO-CALL or going to the Wisconsin No Call List Web site run by the Department of
Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

JoeNetworks @ JRA

It is amazing what's available to help us reach our goals. The web is going to video and yet there are vehicles that get us there without high-cost video production variables.

A long-time associate, George Lottermoser, attended this JoeNetworks @ JRA event and took some still shots. He laid them into a timeline. We sat down later, did a little interview and came up with this wonderful little vehicle for extending the JoeNetworks brand and message.

Yes, this is exciting for JoeNetworks, but now even more exciting, your resume does not have to lie in the pile, your 1.5 minutes of fame* can be endlessly replayed, and your elevator speech can go all the way to the top floor.

We are definitely going to do more of this. How about you?
Contact David White - YourMessageDoctor@gmail.com or George@imagist.com to find out how to quickly put this to work for you.

* Yes, I know it used to be 15 minutes of fame. Things have changed. You ready?

P.S. Lottermoser had his own interesting perspectives on how, when and where to use the tools. Go here: http://www.imagist.com/blog/?p=317

Your Hard Drive Will Fail

This just in from GLi ....

the drive went out to Gillware Inc in Madison yesterday 1300 - 1600
buckaroos to get the data off and of course had to buy another drive
to put it on (200) plus 50 to ship the dead one - Lesson: Assume all
hard drives WILL fail.
Develop a very regular back up strategy.
Assume that the backup strategy has more importance and higher
priority than the work itself.

Of course I thought I knew that and had a good strategy.
But my strategy failed for the most recent (important active files)
work.
I attribute the strategy failure to my being more involved in the
work than the backups.

Hear my loud voice - YOUR HARD DRIVES WILL FAIL

Back up often

All the recent electrical storms required many power-downs. Many (too
many) occurred during normally scheduled backups. When I powered up
to get back to work the backup program would tell me that I needed to
readjust things; but "I" had to get right to work figuring that the
next scheduled back up would catch it all up.

Learn from my hard won lessons.

Balance

I've started networking about the city the last couple months.
Starting JoeNetworks has brought a lot of light on possibilities
beyond the chambers of commerce and the franchises; BNI, TNC, ETC.

There are some independent opportunities that are closed to more than
one of any given profession.
And there are opportunities that are open.

I see it as similar to the difference between synthetic and organic.

I prefer the latter and that's is what I am attempting to create with
JoeNetworks.

At the last meeting there were a few regulars that are based in
Waukesha.
They allowed that they might be interested in doing something out
that way.

I told them it was easy. One, two, three.

1. Tell some people you will be somewhere
2. Be there and
3. Greet them.

It could take a little while to build a group and I, David, do not
have to be there to make that happen.

Some of the independent, yet closed, groups have a waiting list for
membership.
There is administration overhead to that function. I do not want to
be using potential work time to keep track of who is who at a free
meeting.

These are billable hours we're talking about.

I would like to create, or be part of, groups that are self-
administering and collaborative.

And so, ... we will think again about Yahoo Groups and Google Groups.

Honestly, as of this writing, there are no members.
As soon as there are members they can invite each other to functions
that they themselves coordinate.

Caring

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of
the 'Peanuts' comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the
questions.
Just read the e-mail straight through, and you'll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.

4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and
actress.

6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These
are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But
the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten.
Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.

4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.

5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson:

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with
the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are
the ones that care.

Pass this on to those people who have made a difference in your life.

-----

"Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already

Testimonial for 4/24/08

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get a message out to you all thanking you for a great couple of hours this morning. I had a great time and enjoyed meeting and speaking with all of you. This was my first meeting and I wasn't really quite sure what to expect. I only know it went beyond anything I could have imagined.

Special thanks and kudos to David for dreaming this up. I believe this is what networking really should be about.

See you next week!

Sometimes just showing up ....

On the most recent 1st Monday of the month I went to my first
LinkedIn LIVE event at the
Perk & Pub 12862 W. Bluemound Rd, Elm Grove WI 53122 It's an open
event from 5:30 to 8:30.

Here's a calendar of some of the known events around town.

This TinyURL http://tinyurl.com/5uznkx
is the calendar button from here
http://www.mkelive.com/mke.

JoeNetworks will get a listing or link there at some point in time.

And at that place I met Katie Felten who is about as networked as
I've ever seen.

If there were a prize she would get the blue ribbon for being the
first ever to have asked about the Business Book Club listed on
YourMessageDoctor.com.

She's quite a reader herself and we traded recommendations and the
hopes that something else might develop from this trading of ideas.

Signs point to yes.

Meanwhile ... we'll see YOU out and around.

Admission: Just a cup of Joe.

There is a long standing perception that you get what you pay for. But 'pay for' is not limited to cash out of pocket.

I am reading Here Comes Everybody. He's talking about collaborative successes. Wiki, Linux - others. I like that model. JoeNetworks is not free. It has greater value the more you put into it.

What do you put into it?

JoeNetworks Venue Selection

Not too noisy, too busy, or too crowded. This is about meet and greet. So, not too much of anything that is not amenable to meeting and greeting.

A coffee house seems to be a fine mix. They generally also have tea, juices and bakery.
And, there are some restaurants that can be appropriate.

Mind you, this is not about sheer quantity of contacts, but about making sure that the food event does not cut unnecessarily into the time and space apparently alloted for networking.

About JoeNetworks

We are an open, B2B networking group that is part interactive, part focus group, and part Master Mind. Rather than insisting that we are the experts with the elevator speech, we allow for comments, queries, criticism, as well as camaraderie.

Call someone on the list to the right and ask them what happens.
Or call me, the original Joe - 414-282-7185.

Or, stop down and see for yourself - Wednesday's at 7:15 a.m.
